MYSA’s representatives (mostly consisting of previous participants of the programme) organise leagues involving some 20,000 participants. Each team within the league is rewarded points for winning football matches but also for completed clean-up operations. The additional points increase the team’s chances of qualifying for the MYSA play-off. This practice has many benefits, not least is that it educates the youth of Mathare to be responsible for their environment and to be winners on and off the pitch.

Hintergrund
In 1988, MYSA linked football with an environmental clean-up operation in the Mathare slums of Kenya. MYSA organises approximately 48 clean-ups each year using wheelbarrows, rakes, and spades to collect garbage at a designated point. The programme also opens drainage and plants trees on public land and at local schools.
